WITH HUNTING SCENE ~ CIRCA 1825
In the late 18th to mid-19th century nearly all men used tobacco; and finely ground tobacco snuff that was snorted was a favorite and quite in vogue. Early snuff boxes are highly sought after, and are known in a variety of different shapes, sizes, materials and craftsmanship; and date from the 1700's through the 1800's.
This style of Antique snuff, trinket, patch & pill boxes were made in the Old English Villages of Battersea and Bilston, and were created by fusing porcelain coatings to the copper frames that were fired in a kiln. These boxes were both functional and decorative, and were popular as gifts, keepsakes and souvenirs for travelers. The tops had a variety of embellishment designs in classical, mythological, sentimental, portraits, religious, and nautical scenes. Animals depictions are rare and highly sought after. Bilston boxes originated in the English village of Bilston. However, the English village of Battersea soon became a thriving center for producing similar boxes; thus, Battersea Box became the generic name for all such boxes. These pieces were not signed or dated; but can be authenticated by examining their fine detail, delicate and distinct size, shape and colors, and patina. These boxes were embellished by both a transfer printing method developed in the mid-1700s, and also were hand painted. This style box went out of fashion about 1840, and became passé.
This is a Rare & Desirable early 1800's Antique Gentleman's fancy hand painted large snuff box with a stylized hand made porcelain yellow base & decorated top over a copper base; and shows fine artisanship, craftsmanship and attention to detail. The hand painted domed top has a fine detailed hunting scene depicting two mounted Sporting Gents with 2 dogs chasing a deer in a country setting. Most snuff boxes are a standard oval or rectangular shape. This fancy flared oval shape is much more uncommon, was more difficult to create, and more expensive to purchase. This snuff box is very unusual in it's motif; and was obviously intended for a Wealthy Sporting Gentleman at the time.
The top has a fine 3 protrusion type hinge, and the stylized border fits perfectly and the box closes properly. The stylized outside rims have been previoudly lightly cleaned, shows the original copper color and also retains much of the original dark patina in protected area. The inside of the rims of the base and top show a natural, untouched, dark patina. There are light scratches and small patches of wear to the yellow porcelain coating of the bottom. There are no repairs or alterations; just one minuscule, barely noticeable chip adjacent to the back hinge. As can be expected, the porcelain has naturally occurring aging, but only on the inside, with light spotting and in uncleaned debris around the outside rims; and an almost invisible very thin hairline crack to the inside lid. Remember, these snuff boxes are old as dirt, and many were used several times a day for decades. This piece is larger than most, and substantial; 2 3/4" wide X 2 3/16" deep wide X 1 1/4" tall. This was designed to be used at home or business as a table top snuff box. Weight is 2.2 ounces or 65 grams. Overall, this piece is in excellent condition, with naturally occurring very light wear that is commensurate with it's age.
This is a handsome, eye appealing piece of early 19th Century hand made, hand painted Folk Art. This handsome, eye appealing snuff box would be perfect for any Folk Art, Hunting motif, 19th century snuff, Tobacco, Tobacciana collection or display, or use for knickknacks, as a ring box, trinket box, a paper weight, decorator, dresser, desk accessory, man cave or conversation piece; and could still be used today.
